Nicole Curato is Professor of Democratic Governance at the University of Birmingham. Previously, she was a Professor of Political Sociology at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance at the University of Canberra.

Nicole Curato’s research demonstrates the transformative power of deliberative governance in fragile and conflict-affected settings. She welcomes collaborations with academics, practitioners, policymakers, and grassroots movements committed to advancing inclusive citizen engagement and grounding deliberative democratic ideals in diverse local contexts.

Her work examines how democratic innovations unfold in the aftermath of tragedies, including disasters, armed conflict, and urban crime. She is the author of Democracy in a Time of Misery: From Spectacular Tragedy to Deliberative Action and the editor of the Journal of Deliberative Democracy.
